Top Ten DSLR Cameras on Amazon

This entry is part 2 of 2 in the series Amazon Top Photography List

I get asked quite often what the best DSLR camera is for a beginner, so I thought I would post the current top 10 DSLR’s from Amazon.  So, here we go:

Number 10: Canon EOS 70D 20.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with Dual Pixel CMOS AF (Body Only)

This is one of the newest (if not the newest) DSLR from Canon and combines many of the features of Canon’s other cameras into one package, albeit with some trade-offs.  For example, it’s fast shooting mode is fast at 7fps, but doesn’t quite match the 7D’s 8fps.  This is a small difference but could become noticeable if you’re shooting action photography.

Number 9: Nikon D5100 16.2MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens

This one gets high marks from users on Amazon.  My understanding is this is comparable with the Canon T5i.

Number 8: Canon Rebel T5i Digital SLR Camera and 18-55mm EF-S IS STM Lens Kit

I started digital photography with the Canon T1i and still have it as my backup to the 7D.  For a beginner, it’s hard to go wrong with the T series.  I loved my older version of this 18 megapixel DSLR.

Number 7:Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD (Body Only)

Although I don’t own this camera, I’ve considered buying this camera as a backup to the 7D.  I really like the flip screen on it and thought it would be great in nature photography for getting down close to the ground.

Number 6:Nikon D3100 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens

This one is not as capable as some other higher end cameras on this list, but at this low price ($447 as I write this), it would be a great starting point for someone on a budget.

Number 5:Canon EOS 5D Mark III 22.3 MP Full Frame CMOS with 1080p Full-HD Video Mode Digital SLR Camera (Body)

Ah yes, my lovely – I wants you, I do.  This is the camera that us Canon users typically lust over and the choose of many professional photographers.  It’s full frame, 22.3 megapixels, and good low light performance.  But, alas, at over $3000 (at the time of this writing), I just can’t justify it right now.

Number 4:Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Sensor DIGIC 4 Image Processor Full-HD Movie Mode Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch Clear View Vari-Angle LCD (Body Only)

Another great T series Canon camera.  If you are looking for something a little cheaper than the T5i (a couple of hundred bucks cheaper), this would be a great choice.  Note, this one is the body only without a lens.

Number 3:Nikon D3200 24.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR NIKKOR Zoom Lens (Black)

I don’t know much about this camera (being a Nikon), but looking at it’s specs and price ($546 today), I can see why it’s number 3 in sells.  It’s got 24.2 megapixels (that’s very high at that price point) and possibility to add WiFi (with an adapter).  The only downside I can see is the continuous shooting is only 4 fps, but most cameras in this range are similar.  If I were buying a camera today as a beginner, this would be on the short list.

Number 2:Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera and DIGIC 4 Imaging with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens

This is the T3i listed in Number 4 above, but with the addition of a 18-55 mm lens.  I have that lens and while not up to L lens status (but what lens is?), it’s very functional and good for starting out.

Number 1:Canon EOS Rebel T3 12.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm IS II Lens and EOS HD Movie Mode (Black)

For the absolute lowest price for a really decent camera, it’s hard to beat the Canon Rebel T3;  For example, it’s over $200 cheaper than the Canon T3i.  It does only have 12.2 megapixels compared to the T3i’s 18 megapixels, but megapixel count is everything.  If you are a beginner, this should definitely be on your list.

One camera that I’ll mention that didn’t make this list (but came in at number 11) is the Canon EOS 6D 20.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD (Body Only).  It’s one of the newer Canon cameras and comes with full frame.  If you bought this camera as a beginner, it would take many years to outgrow it.  This will probably be the next camera I buy in order to get the full frame capability.
So that’s it – thanks for checking out this list.  I enjoy writing these, so will plan on more in the future.
