Carpenter Falls Photo

Carpenter Falls in Granby, Connecticut

The photo above is Carpenter Falls located in the Caruso Collamore Carpenter Preserve in Granby, Connecticut.  This is a beautiful falls and I didn’t see another soul while I was at the falls – this is probably because it’s quite a way off the beaten trail.  In fact, my SUV did fine, but I would be very careful going to this waterfall in a car that’s really low to the ground;  the dirt road leading to the falls is dirt and had some large mud holes when I was there.

One weird thing happened while I was there.  In the back of my mind, I kept thinking “This would be a great place for bears”.  As much as I would have liked to see a bear (I have seen one here in Connecticut while hiking and I was amazed how fast he could run – luckily in the other direction), I have a slight (or not so slight) fear of bears, especially if they are guarding their cubs.

When I had finished my photo session and was packing up, all of a sudden, two black shapes came running out of the woods and headed straight for me.  My first thought was:  Bears!  However, I quickly realized they were canine shaped, so my next thought was, of course:  Wolves!  However, since I’m writing this today, you’ve probably realized that it was neither bears or wolves – it was two black retrievers.  They came running by me, one of them gave a quick “Woof”, which I took as a polite hello, and jumped into the stream.  When they were done, they ran by me again, with a good-bye “Woof” and headed back into the woods.

This all happened in the span of about 30 seconds.  I was left standing there wondering if had really happened.  Luckily, on my way out of the preserve, I saw the dogs again and their owner, who was jogging down the dirt road.  Those had to be two of the happiest dogs I’ve ever seen.
