Osprey Photos from Hammonasset Beach State Park

I had the day off today and visited Hammonasset Beach State Park.  I was hoping that maybe I would catch some of the migratory birds coming in, but I think because it’s been such a cold, wet Spring, the migrations may be slightly behind this year.

At the park, I walked out to Willard’s Island, but all I saw were blackbirds, crows, crackles, and cowbirds.  I could see the Osprey on their nesting platforms, but they were so far away that I couldn’t get a good shot with the lens I have.  On the way back to the parking lot, I think the Osprey must have thought I looked rather dejected because they decided to put on an aerial display right over my head.

I took several shots of the Osprey on the road to Willard Island, but when I got back to the car, I realized that I had my f-stop way too high;  I had set it for a couple of landscape shots and forgot to set it back (surprisingly, those shots weren’t as bad as I had expected).  I went back to the car and on the drive out, the Ospreys were flying right over me.  So, I stopped and shot more of the Osprey air show until my SD card was totally full.  It turned into quite an afternoon after such a slow start.

Here’s a couple of photos of the Osprey today.  As you can tell, the sky was totally overcast, so it’s a rather dull background, but I think the Osprey make up for it.
